NEESCHI: Celebrating the Valais Blacknose Sheep Through Design
NEESCHI is a Zermatt-based design firm that transforms the long, highly curled wool of the Valais Blacknose sheep into exceptional carpets and accessories. Every product is crafted in small, specialised manufactories, with a deep respect for this unique natural resource at the heart of their work.
From Tradition to Revival
Founded in 2013 by designer Caroline Weder Carrarini, NEESCHI began with a vision to create products from Valais Blacknose wool. At the time, wool processing in Switzerland had nearly disappeared. Through determination and collaboration with farmers and local facilities, Caroline brought this lost craft back to life. Today, every stage of production—from collecting the wool to spinning it into yarn—is proudly carried out in Switzerland, honouring the region’s heritage while promoting sustainability.
The Valais Blacknose Sheep
A Timeless Tradition
Dating back to the 14th century, the Valais Blacknose sheep is a symbol of Swiss heritage and an authentic treasure of the Valais region. Renowned for its striking appearance—marked by black accents on its nose, eyes, ears, knees, and feet—and its light, curly wool coat, this breed has earned the affectionate title of the “World’s Cutest Sheep.”
Adapted to thrive in the high-altitude landscapes of Valais, these sheep are skilled mountaineers, capable of grazing even on the steepest slopes. Their wool is not only beautiful but also incredibly functional. It offers warmth and resilience, protecting the sheep from harsh winter storms while regulating heat during hot summers. These qualities make Valais Blacknose wool an exceptional material for creating durable carpets and interior furnishings, combining practicality with natural elegance.
